Patent Attorney

The University of Minnesota Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Associate General Counsel and Patent Counsel. This attorney will be a member of OGC’s newly established in-house patent practice group, and will report to the University’s General Counsel. The attorney will receive assignments and supervision from OGC’s Senior Patent Counsel in providing services to the University, principally to the Vice President for Research and the Office for Technology Commercialization. The attorney will prepare, file, and prosecute domestic patent applications; advise clients and faculty on patentability issues and patenting strategies; advise clients and faculty on licensing issues; investigate potential patent infringements; and instruct foreign associates.

Essential experience includes at least four years of full-time practice in patent law, including preparing and prosecuting US patent applications; an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar higher education degree; a JD from an ABA accredited law school; registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office; licensed (or eligible) to practice law in Minnesota.

Preferred experience includes electronic, medical-device and computer-system/software prosecution; patent versus copyright software protection issues and strategies; patentability, infringement, and validity opinion experience; and experience with client counseling on patent-portfolio strategy and patent-portfolio management.

Excellent legal, organizational, analytical, negotiating, drafting and leadership skills are required. OGC offers competitive compensation based upon individual qualifications.

Specific responsibilities include: Evaluate patentability prospects on the basis of stage-of-invention-development and prior art; work closely with the Office for Technology Commercialization on a variety of patent-related matters; conduct and manage infringement investigations involving the University’s technologies. Practice may focus on the following technology areas: biomedical engineering; computer science; computer and electrical engineering.

A search committee will be chaired by Andrew Rozycki, Senior Patent Counsel, OGC. The committee will begin considering resumes on December 15, 2008. Applications may be reviewed by the committee until the position is filled.
